Autism Assessments and Screening

Autism and ADHD Screening Consultations

We offer a structured two-part screening process for children and adolescents where autism or ADHD may be a concern. These sessions help determine whether a formal diagnostic assessment is recommended or whether therapy may be the most appropriate next step.

Session 1 – Parent Discussion (via phone or in person)

The first session is with the parent only and focuses on your child’s developmental history, strengths, and current challenges. Parents can share their observations in a relaxed conversation. Complimentary screening forms are provided to complete at home, offering a structured overview of key developmental, social, and behavioural areas.

These forms are an important part of the process and are not charged as an extra add-on.

Session 2 – Child Meeting and Observation

In the second session, Wendy meets with your child in person to review the screening information, observe interactions, communication style, and general mannerisms. These natural observations help identify whether your child is likely showing traits consistent with autism or ADHD that may warrant further investigation through a formal assessment.

Feedback and Next Steps

After both sessions, Wendy provides a brief verbal feedback indicating whether your child’s presentation appears within the typical range, consistent with neurodivergent traits, or in a borderline range where further assessment would be beneficial.

All screening form information is considered raw clinical data and, unless incorporated into a formal diagnostic assessment, cannot be released as written documentation to families.

The screening process does not include a written report or diagnosis.

If you would like a short paediatrician letter summarising the screening impressions and next steps, this can be arranged in a third session following discussion of the findings.

Please note: Screening consultations are billed as standard therapy sessions.

Our goal is to provide ethical, accurate, and compassionate guidance from the very beginning - without unnecessary cost or pressure.

Sometimes a parent may become aware that their child is displaying some unusual behaviours or delays. This may include repetitive movements, little eye contact, restricted interests, lack of creative play, anxiety, rigidity, parallel play, lining things up often, big feelings, a delay in speech and/or motor skills, lack of facial expressions and emotional understanding for their age, amongst other symptoms.

Providing a diagnosis can be a huge relief for parents and even teachers in understanding the child more and being able to support the child moving forwards.

Rainbow Care Psychology offers Autism Assessment Packages to identify all levels of Autism.

Comprehensive Autism Assessments for Clarity and Confidence

At Rainbow Care Psychology, our formal assessments are intentionally thorough.

We have a special interest in comprehensive autism and developmental reports that provide diagnostic clarity, detailed functional insights, and practical recommendations to guide ongoing support.

Each assessment integrates multiple sources of information, including parent and teacher reports, standardised rating scales, and direct clinical observations, to ensure findings are both accurate and meaningful.

Families consistently tell us that they value the depth and detail of this approach, particularly when clarity or confirmation is important for NDIS and school-based supports.

The package includes the following:

* Consultation time with other professionals

* 1 x 50 minute initial interview with parents

* All teacher and parent forms required for assessment

* 2 x 50 minute assessment sessions with the teen/child

* Written report

* 1 x parent feedback session including emailed comprehensive report with diagnosis and recommendations.

Please note that Speech Pathologist, possible Cognitive Assessment and Paediatrician fees are additional costs.

If your child has been tested prior to school age and needs a Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales assessment performed solely, RCP can also help. We offer the Teacher and/or Parent version which is often needed for funding purposes.

Adult autism assessments are also available. The autism assessment age range starts at 2.5 years of age right through to adulthood.

All assessments are part of a team and must be signed off by a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

All autism assessments and screening are conducted personally by senior clinician, Wendy Henriks. This means every stage of the assessment-from the initial parent meeting to the final feedback and written report, is completed by Wendy herself.

Wendy welcomes enquiries from families who wish to further explore diagnostics.
